Most counterfeits waste your money. A counterfeit car seat gambles with the one passenger who cannot choose, in the one crash nobody schedules. Fake and non compliant child seats have been found on marketplace and discount channels repeatedly, dressed in the colours and logos of brands parents trust, built without the testing, materials, or energy management that make the real thing boring in a collision.
This is not a category for bargain instincts. It is a category for provenance, and the checks below are the ones safety organisations and manufacturers themselves publish, in plain form.
A genuine water filter for a stated standard can be found in the certifier's own listing, under the exact model number, naming the standard it was tested to. Counterfeits copy the box art and the certification logos while appearing in no listing at all. Checking the model in the certifier's database takes two minutes and settles what packaging never can.
Filtration is invisible in use, which makes filters a perfect counterfeit product. The copy matches the housing, the label, and the fit, clicks in exactly like the original, and then underperforms where it cannot be seen: less carbon media, poorer quality media, or a loose fill that lets water channel past the material instead of through it. The water tastes acceptable, the fridge reports a fresh filter, and nothing announces that the stated contaminant reductions are not happening.
The stated reductions are the whole product. Certified filters are tested against named standards for specific claims, such as lead or certain chemical reductions, under defined flow and capacity conditions. A filter that was never tested carries the claims as decoration. The health framing should be proportionate, most municipal water starts safe, but a household that bought a filter for a specific reduction is entitled to actually receive it.
Start with the certifier's database, not the box. Major certifiers keep searchable listings; enter the exact model number and confirm the listing names your standard and your refrigerator or pitcher model compatibility. A logo on packaging with no listing behind it is just printing. Then weigh the filter against a known genuine one if you have it: media is most of the working weight, and noticeably lighter copies are a recurring tell.
Buy through channels that can state their source. Marketplace listings from rotating sellers at half the usual price are where these copies concentrate, and multipacks deepen the problem because one purchase stocks a year of fakes. Check the model markings moulded into the housing against the genuine article's photos on the manufacturer's site, including font and placement; copy housings get the decoration almost right and the small moulded text wrong.
Replace it with a verified filter and do not agonise over the interval it served; for most households the exposure question is modest, and the fix is simply to restore filtration you can confirm. Report the listing with your database check as evidence, since a model absent from the certifier's listing is a cleaner complaint than a suspicion about taste.
Keep the genuine filter's box or photograph its markings before discarding it next time. Having a reference unit, its weight, its moulded text, its listing entry, turns every future purchase into a thirty second comparison instead of a research project.

Search the certifier's own online listing for the exact model number and confirm it names the standard and claims printed on the box. A certification logo with no matching listing is a printed claim, not a certification.
Noticeably lighter weight than a genuine unit, because media fill is reduced, moulded model text in the wrong font or place, and packaging errors. Any one sign is suggestive; the database check is what confirms it.
The main issue is that the reductions you bought it for may not happen, since the copy was never tested to the named standards. Households filtering for a specific contaminant should treat an unverified filter as no filter and replace it.
Because the expensive part is invisible: quality carbon media in the right quantity, plus testing and certification. A housing with a token amount of media costs little to make, which is exactly the saving being sold.
